I have recently returned to rewatch Babylon 5. I have watched a lot of it before but gave up around Season 4 when I felt the series lost its way somewhat. Still I always remembered that it had tons going for it early on and felt it was worth a second try.
What I didn't remember was just how utterly fantastic it is early on. I'm about half way through season 2 and it just keeps getting better. Even though I'm watching it over again and know it all I'm still feeling blown away each episode with the wonderful scripting, characters and story arks. Its breath-takingly good sci-fi.
That is all.

It is a fantastic series. Still probably one of my all time favourites.
ReplyDeleteWow. I have never heard of someone giving up on the series in seasons 3 or 4. In Season the Shadow War really starts to heat up, and when the Babylon 5 crew find themselves cut off from home. Season 4 is normally considered a roller coaster ride with both the culmination of the Shadow War and the resolution of the problems back on Earth.
ReplyDeleteI would be interested to here more on where you believe the series lost its way.
I can't really say for sure why I gave up then. But the series seemed to change pace and story a bit too much later on. I felt it lost its focus I suppose.
ReplyDeleteI have since learned that it had some funding concerns in the later seasons which made them had to finish story lines faster than intended. I think that led to my feelings that is was, well, too rushed. So about half way through season 4 I gave up.
Ah. Yes, the small group of stations (remember the PTEN network?) was disbanding and there was no home (or money) to make the fifth season.
ReplyDelete...until TNT stepped in after 4th season had been completed (but not all episodes shown).
Sadly, if you thought the pacing of 4th season was rushed, the early part of 5th season may disappoint for the opposite reason (all the storylines had been wrapped up, so there was no momentum going into season 5).
